The HEROES Program for Veterans & First Responders

Welcome to the Pennsylvania Recovery Center's HEROES Program, a dedicated initiative focused on providing comprehensive addiction and mental health treatment services tailored for our nation's veterans and first responders. Our program is designed to address the unique challenges faced by those who have served our country and communities, offering a supportive path toward recovery and wellness. As a proud VA Community Care Network provider, we are committed to ensuring that our heroes receive the high-quality care they deserve, close to home. We focus on helping but not limited to Veterans, Police Officers, Firefighters, EMTs, and more!

Our Services

The HEROES Program at Pennsylvania Recovery Center offers a wide range of services to meet the diverse needs of our clients, including:

  • Sober Living: Our sober living facilities provide a safe and supportive environment for veterans and first responders in recovery. These residences are designed to help individuals transition back into everyday life with the support they need to maintain sobriety.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): For those requiring more intensive treatment, our PHP offers structured care during the day, allowing clients to return home or to a sober living environment in the evening. This program is ideal for individuals needing medical supervision and therapeutic support without the need for round-the-clock care.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our IOP provides flexible treatment options for clients who are working, going to school, or have family obligations. This program includes therapy and support services structured around the client's schedule, offering a balance between treatment and daily life.
  • Case Management: To ensure a holistic approach to recovery, our case management services provide personalized support to address the various challenges our clients may face. From coordinating care with the VA Community Care Network to assisting with housing, employment, and legal issues, our case managers are here to help.
  • Detox and Rehabilitation: For those in need of detoxification services, don't search google for "detox near me" and "rehab near me" options. We will  ensure that veterans and first responders have access to safe and effective care close to home. We will find appropiate detox programs that are medically supervised, providing a safe start to the recovery journey, while the rehabilitation services offer comprehensive treatment to address addiction and underlying mental health issues.

Our Commitment

At the Pennsylvania Recovery Center, we understand the sacrifices made by veterans and first responders. The HEROES Program is our way of giving back, offering a beacon of hope and a path to recovery for our nation's heroes. Our team of experienced professionals is dedicated to providing compassionate, individualized care, ensuring that every client receives the support they need to overcome addiction and achieve lasting wellness.

As a VA Community Care Network provider, we are committed to making our services accessible to veterans, ensuring they receive the benefits and care they have earned. Our goal is to provide a seamless and supportive treatment experience, helping our clients rebuild their lives with dignity and respect.

Some Words From Our Director

My personal journey has been shaped by my service in the United States Marine Corps, as well as my experiences as a firefighter and then a police officer/ detective.  I transitioned from those front-line roles in 2019 and became the director of an addiction treatment program for veterans and first responders.  This position resonated deeply with my own recovery journey, which began in September 2010.

My path to recovery included the benefit of treatment, which ignited my passion for helping others facing similar struggles.  With an understanding of the unique challenges faced by veterans and first responders, especially regarding the cumulative effects of trauma, I have committed my career to providing support and guidance to others.

Equine Therapy at Pennsylvania Recovery Center: The HEROES Program

At the Pennsylvania Recovery Center, we are proud to offer Equine Therapy as a key component of our HEROES Program, designed to support the recovery and mental health of veterans and first responders. This innovative therapeutic approach harnesses the unique bond between humans and horses to facilitate healing, personal growth, and emotional well-being. Our Equine Therapy offerings are thoughtfully integrated into our comprehensive treatment plans, providing a powerful tool for those on their journey to recovery.

The Power of Equine Therapy

Equine Therapy, also known as Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT), involves interactive activities with horses to promote emotional healing and personal development. This form of therapy has been recognized for its effectiveness in treating a wide range of psychological issues, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and addiction. Horses are highly sensitive animals, capable of mirroring and responding to human emotions, which makes them excellent partners in the therapeutic process.

Benefits of Equine Therapy

Our Equine Therapy program offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Improved Emotional Awareness and Regulation: Working with horses helps individuals become more aware of their emotions and learn how to regulate them effectively. Horses respond to non-verbal cues, encouraging clients to become more mindful of their feelings and behaviors.
  • Enhanced Self-Confidence: The process of learning to interact with and care for horses builds self-confidence and self-esteem. Achieving goals with the horses can empower individuals, boosting their confidence in their ability to overcome challenges.
  • Stress Reduction: The natural environment of equine therapy, combined with the calming presence of horses, significantly reduces stress and promotes relaxation. This can be particularly beneficial for veterans and first responders who have experienced high levels of stress in their service.
  • Development of Trust and Social Skills: Building a relationship with a horse requires trust, patience, and communication. These skills are transferable to human relationships, helping individuals improve their social interactions and build healthier relationships.
  • Physical Rehabilitation: Equine Therapy also offers physical benefits, such as improved balance, coordination, and motor skills, through the activities involved in caring for and riding the horses.
