PHP vs. IOP: what actually differs

Both are outpatient — you sleep at home or in recovery housing. The difference is how many hours a week you spend in treatment and how much medical oversight comes with it.

Time in treatment

PHP

About 6 hours a day, 5 days a week

IOP

About 3 hours a session, 3–5 days a week

Best for

PHP

Early recovery, post-detox, or when outpatient alone has not held

IOP

Stepping down from PHP, or when structure is needed alongside work

Work & school

PHP

Usually on medical leave or FMLA during the day program

IOP

Built around a job or class schedule — day, evening, or virtual from anywhere in PA

Clinical intensity

PHP

Daily group therapy, psychiatric oversight, medication management

IOP

Group therapy plus weekly individual sessions and MAT if indicated

Individual therapy

PHP

2 individual sessions per week

IOP

1–2 individual sessions per week

Typical length

PHP

Determined by you and your clinical team, based on progress

IOP

6–12 weeks, tapering as stability grows

Housing

PHP

Recovery housing available through Phoenix Recovery Project

IOP

Recovery housing available; many clients live at home

Most people move through both: PHP first to stabilize, then IOP as work, school, and family life come back online. Your plan is set by a licensed clinician using ASAM criteria, not by a call center.

Not sure which program fits?

A free, confidential assessment takes about 15 minutes — a licensed clinician will tell you where to start.

The benefits of PHP

PHP gives you the clinical intensity of a residential program while you keep living your life — sleeping in your own bed, seeing your family, and staying connected to the community you are recovering inside of.

Live at home

You go home every evening. No month away, no locked unit — real treatment that fits around the people and responsibilities waiting for you at home.

Hospital-level care, outpatient price

Six hours of structured clinical care a day — groups, individual therapy, psychiatry, and MAT — typically covered by major insurance, without residential cost.

Family stays in the loop

Because you are home, family therapy and education happen in real time with the people actually around you — not over a weekly phone call.

Practice recovery where you live

Every evening is a rep: use the skills from group that same night in your real environment, then bring what worked — and what did not — back to your clinician the next morning.

A clear step-down path

PHP stabilizes you fast, then hands off to IOP with evening tracks so work and school return on your schedule, not the other way around.

Optional sober living support

Not ready to sleep at home? Recovery housing through Phoenix Recovery Project adds a sober, structured, accountable place to live for the length of treatment — and it is optional, not required.

Optional: recovery housing

Structure and accountability after 3 PM

For clients who want additional support and accountability, Phoenix Recovery Project offers sober living near both offices — a substance-free home with house standards, peer accountability, and a built-in recovery community. Many PHP clients use it for the first few weeks and transition home when they are ready. Ask admissions and we will tell you honestly whether it fits your situation.

Proven Outcomes

Our completion and sobriety rates

We operate as a family-oriented, community-driven program rather than a corporate facility, and the numbers follow.

53%

of clients complete our PHP and IOP programs, compared with a national average near 26% for similar outpatient programs.

80%

of graduates maintain sobriety for at least one year, based on alumni follow-up surveys.

90%

client satisfaction, citing personalized care and the supportive environment.

Addiction in southeastern Pennsylvania

Overdose remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in Pennsylvania, and the counties we serve — Chester, Montgomery, Delaware, Philadelphia, and Berks — carry a heavy share of it. Fentanyl, xylazine-adulterated supply in Philadelphia, alcohol, and benzodiazepines all show up in our assessments weekly. Most people who need treatment never get it, usually because the front door felt too far away or too complicated.

PHP and IOP exist to shorten that distance: real clinical intensity, close to home, without leaving your life behind for a month.

Who you will actually work with

  • Board-certified addiction medicine physicians

Building comprehensive treatment plans, including MAT when appropriate.

  • Licensed therapists and counselors

Specializing in CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care.

  • Certified recovery specialists

People with lived experience who provide peer support and inspire hope.

  • Psychiatrists and medical staff

Managing co-occurring mental health disorders and ensuring holistic care.

“The therapists at Pennsylvania Recovery Center gave me the tools to stay sober and the confidence to rebuild my life. They truly care.”

Groups of five to seven keep attention personal, and we are in network with most major carriers — including UnitedHealthcare, Independence Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, Geisinger, Keystone, and TRICARE.

Common questions about PHP and IOP

Is PHP the same as inpatient rehab?

No. PHP is a full clinical day — roughly 6 hours, 5 days a week — but you sleep at home or in recovery housing instead of on a locked unit. It is the highest level of outpatient care.

How do I know whether I need PHP or IOP?

A licensed clinician completes a free assessment and uses ASAM criteria. If you have recently detoxed, are managing withdrawal, or outpatient therapy has not held, PHP is usually the starting point. IOP fits when you are stable enough to work or study while still needing structure.

Can I keep my job while in PHP?

Most PHP clients use FMLA or short-term leave for the PHP portion of treatment, then move into IOP with evening groups. How long you stay in PHP is determined by you and your clinical team based on your progress, not a fixed number of weeks. Our admissions team helps with the paperwork.

Do you take my insurance?

We are in network with most major carriers including Independence Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Geisinger, Keystone, and TRICARE. Verification takes a few minutes by phone.

How far are you from Philadelphia?

Our Center City Philadelphia office serves the city directly, and the Phoenixville office is roughly 35 minutes from Center City via 76 or the Norristown line, with easy access from King of Prussia, Norristown, Collegeville, and West Chester.
