Group work is where recovery gets normal. Individual therapy is where the things you will not say in front of eight people get addressed — the affair, the debt, the arrest, the suicidal thought, the relapse you have not told anyone about.
With two sessions a week, a problem that comes up Monday gets worked on Tuesday and reviewed Thursday. In a program with monthly individual sessions, that same problem has four weeks to become a relapse.
You are assigned one therapist and keep them. They know your history, your family, your job and your triggers, which means you never restart the story from the beginning.
Individual therapy is also where your treatment plan is actually driven — what changes, what levels of care come next, and when it is safe to step down.
