Chris Therien to Speak at PRO-ACT's Recovery Walks

Every fall, thousands of people in recovery, their families, and the people who lost someone walk together along the Delaware River in Philadelphia for PRO-ACT's Recovery Walks. Our Chief Wellness Officer, former Flyers defenseman Chris Therien, was invited to speak — and he talked about his own recovery, not a highlight reel.

If you are in southeastern Pennsylvania and wondering whether recovery is possible, this event is the single clearest answer: a river of people who are living it. Our Phoenixville, Center City Philadelphia and Avondale offices are part of that same community.

What Recovery Walks is

Recovery Walks is organized each year by PRO-ACT — the Pennsylvania Recovery Organization Achieving Community Together, a program of the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania. It is a free, family-friendly walk on Philadelphia's Penn's Landing that brings together people in recovery, families who have lost someone to overdose, treatment providers, and recovery community organizations.

It is not a fundraiser dressed up as a rally. The point is visibility: putting recovery in public, in daylight, with names and faces attached, so that the stigma that keeps people from asking for help has a harder time surviving.

Why Chris was asked to speak

Chris Therien played 764 NHL games, most of them for the Philadelphia Flyers, and then nearly lost everything to alcohol. He has been open about the drinking, the consequences, and the work of getting sober — which is exactly why the recovery community keeps asking him to talk.

He tells the part most athletes skip: that being tough is what kept him sick, and that asking for help was the harder thing. You can read more about Chris joining Pennsylvania Recovery Center and about the Recovery Awareness Night he headlined.

You do not need an event to start. Call (610) 233-4342 and we will check your benefits and tell you what is open this week.

Who shows up

  • People in recovery — first-week to forty-years, walking side by side
  • Families — including parents and siblings walking in memory of someone they lost
  • Recovery houses and community groups from Chester, Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware and Philadelphia counties
  • Treatment providers like us, there to answer questions without a sales pitch
  • Employers, unions and first responders who see overdose up close

Why this matters in our counties

Southeastern Pennsylvania has been at the center of the overdose crisis for a decade, and Philadelphia's fentanyl and tranq supply is among the most dangerous in the country. Public events like this do something clinical care cannot: they show a person who is still using that people like them get out.

Stigma is measurable. People delay treatment for years because of what they think their family, boss or neighbors will say. A visible, celebratory crowd shortens that delay — and shortening the delay is how people survive long enough to get care.

How to get involved

Register through PRO-ACT — walking is free, teams are welcome, and you do not have to be in recovery to attend. If you are early in recovery and nervous about crowds, bring your sponsor or a friend and plan to leave when you want to.

If you would rather start with treatment than an event, our PHP runs about six hours a day, our IOP runs nine to fifteen hours a week with day and evening tracks, and virtual IOP covers all of Pennsylvania.

Common questions

Do I have to be in recovery to attend Recovery Walks?

No. Families, friends, coworkers, providers and anyone who has lost someone are all welcome, and the walk is free.

Where is the walk held?

Along Philadelphia's waterfront at Penn's Landing, a short drive or SEPTA ride from our Center City Philadelphia office.

Is my attendance confidential?

The event is public, so plan accordingly. If you want privacy, treatment itself is confidential and protected by HIPAA — call us instead of attending.

Can I start treatment at the event?

Our team can answer questions there, but admission starts with a brief phone assessment and an insurance check. Call (610) 233-4342 any day.
